It’s the Day of the Girl.
Today is my friend Carly’s b-day. I have known the woman since 3rd grade. I need not tell you that a great deal happens between third grade and 2012, but we’ve been through a lot together – detentions (almost always my fault), bad break-ups, the birthday of her beautiful baby boy and almost everything in the middle.Today I celebrate her. It’s also special because October 11 is the first-ever International Day of the Girl and Girl Up is marking this milestone for girls around the world with a global celebration. Girl Up is an innovative campaign of the United Nations Foundation which gives American girls the opportunity to become global leaders and channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for United Nations programs that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.Today, Girl Up clubs, Teen Advisors, and supporters will join the hundreds of events happening simultaneously around the world to celebrate the importance of girls everywhere.Learn more about Girl Up and the Day of the Girl here.
