Say Less. I Gotchu.: My Thoughts on Code Switching.

In a recent New York Times opinion piece titled, "Harris Gonna Code Switch,” the complexities of Vice President Kamala Harris’s ability to navigate different cultural contexts were examined. The article delves into Harris’s unique position as a public figure who embodies multiple identities—being both Black and South Asian—and the ways she adapts her communication style depending on her audience. This concept, known as code-switching, is a familiar one to many people of color who often adjust their language, tone, and behavior to better fit into predominantly white or other cultural spaces.

Given my commitment to folks being their authentic selves in every space. I wanted to chit chat a little about this. 

The Art and Necessity of Code-Switching

Code-switching is not merely a performative act; it’s a survival mechanism that many people of color employ to navigate spaces that weren’t designed with them in mind. For Harris, who exists in the highest echelons of American political power, code-switching is an essential tool for connecting with various communities. It’s about meeting people where they are, understanding their cultural nuances, and engaging them in a way that feels authentic and relatable.

The New York Times article highlights how Harris deftly shifts between the vernaculars of her multifaceted identities. Whether she’s engaging with Black communities, speaking to South Asian audiences, or addressing the nation at large, Harris is constantly code-switching—a skill that, while powerful, also opens her up to criticism from those who view her as inauthentic or opportunistic.

A Double-Edged Sword

The piece aptly points out that Harris’s ability to code-switch is both a strength and a liability. On one hand, it allows her to connect with diverse constituents, making her a more effective leader. On the other hand, it subjects her to scrutiny from those who question the sincerity of her identity and her ability to represent the communities she aligns with authentically.

This critique is not unique to Harris; it’s a common experience for many public figures who straddle multiple identities. They are often held to an impossible standard of authenticity, expected to embody every aspect of their identity fully and simultaneously, regardless of the context. This expectation fails to acknowledge the reality that identity is fluid and multifaceted and that code-switching is a necessary tool for survival in a world that is often hostile to difference.

The Hidden Costs of Code-Switching

While code-switching can be a powerful tool for connection, it comes with significant costs. According to a Harvard Business Review article titled “The Costs of Code-Switching," constantly adjusting one’s behavior to conform to different cultural norms can lead to emotional exhaustion, decreased authenticity, and even professional disadvantages. The pressure to code-switch can make individuals feel like they must hide parts of their identity, leading to a sense of alienation and decreased well-being.

The energy expended in code-switching can detract from an individual’s ability to engage in their work or leadership roles fully. In Harris’s case, the mental and emotional toll of constantly shifting between her identities could potentially impact her ability to perform at her best. This is a reality that many people of color face daily in the workplace, where the need to fit in can overshadow the freedom to bring their full, authentic selves to the table.

Remember What Happened to Mario Lopez?

The complexities of code-switching aren’t limited to politics. In the entertainment industry, celebrities also navigate the fine line between authenticity and adaptability. Recently, actor and television host Mario Lopez acknowledged his use of code-switching during a viral TikTok video where he adjusted his speech pattern and mannerisms to better connect with different audiences. While some praised Lopez's actions as a sign of his versatility and relatability, others criticized him for what they perceived as pandering or inauthenticity.

This example illustrates how code-switching is often scrutinized in public figures, regardless of their field. Many people in the public eye face the challenge of maintaining authenticity while trying to appeal to a broader audience. Lopez’s experience, like Harris’s, underscores the double-edged nature of code-switching. It can be a powerful tool for broadening one’s appeal, but it also invites questions about one’s true identity and intentions.

Building a Culture That *GETS* It 

For leaders everywhere, the challenge is to balance the need for connection with the importance of authenticity. It’s about finding ways to connect with diverse audiences without losing sight of one’s true self—a task that is easier said than done, but essential for effective and sustainable leadership.

To mitigate the negative impacts of code-switching, I believe it’s crucial to foster environments that celebrate diversity and encourage individuals to embrace their authentic selves. Organizations and leaders must create spaces where different cultural expressions are valued and respected. By doing so, they can reduce the need for individuals to code-switch and allow them to engage more fully and authentically in their work.

These experiences serve as a reminder that identity is not monolithic, and neither is leadership. The ability to code-switch can be a testament to adaptability and understanding of the diverse American landscape. It’s a skill that should be celebrated rather than criticized. I do believe that code-switching and authenticity can coexist. Code-switching is not about compromising identity; it’s about expanding it to include the many voices and experiences that make up the fabric of this nation. In a world that often seeks to box individuals into neat categories, 

We must create environments where all aspects of one’s identity can be fully expressed and celebrated. Only then can we move towards a more inclusive society where people like Harris, Mario Lopez, you, and me can thrive without the burden of constantly shifting between worlds.
