Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what are the characteristics of a good leader.
We all know (or should) that just because one is given a title, it doesn’t automatically mean they know how to lead. I hear tales day after day from managers, coordinators and directors who are hungry for good leaders. I can’t help but wonder, where are we failing? Why are we failing? Perhaps the stress of having to produce at a break-neck pace is the culprit? Or maybe it’s that everyone is too scared of a ‘doomed’ economy and lack of job opportunities to call their bad bosses out on their shenanigans. I am not sure what the deal is. I do know that there’s a problem.
I came across a recent blog post from Virgin founder Richard Branson and was thoroughly inspired. From their airlines to their products, I am a true fan of the Virgin brand. Mostly, I am a fan of Richard’s ethos when it comes to being a businessman and Founder. Surely, he doesn’t need my co-sign on his decisions – the dude is filthy rich. I just have to admit that I admire his style of leadership.
In a recent blog post titled, “Empower your employees, don’t lead over them,” he expresses: I wholeheartedly believe companies should give their teams freedom to make their own decisions and express themselves.
What would happen if more leaders thought this way? What would happen if we truly trusted our teams to deliver? Good things, I would imagine. Be like me and get inspired. Read Richard Branson’s blog here.
